On my Table: Storm Above the Reich

On my Table: Storm Above the Reich

Storm Above the Reich is a follow-up to GMT's successful Skies Above the Reich, covering the later part of the air war in Europe. It spans the 1943 Mediterranean theater of operations through 1945 defense of Germany against American bombing raids. Compared to Skies Above the Reich, Storm has the player commanding FW-190 fighters (vs. BF-109s) against American B-24s (vs. B-17s).

I love Storm above the Reich for one of the same reasons I love the DVG's Leader series: it plays out in manageable gaming sessions, but still forms a longer campaign that has me caring about my pilots mission-to-mission. It's also not too bad to pick up and play with multiple player aids making the turn sequence easy to follow. It's deep enough for a lot of strategic and tactical decision making, and I haven't even broken into the advanced rules yet.

It is a bit of a table hog, but when you have adequate space to lay it out the game plays very smoothly.

Building on the success of Skies above the Reich and Storm above the Reich, GMT just released Skies Above Britain, covering the Battle of Britain from the perspective of the RAF. I haven't had a chance to play this one, but it has great reviews so far.

EDIT: We now have Storm Above the Reich in stock!
